Although undoubtedly the most expensive city in the region, ‘The Lion City’ has also recently hit headlines for being one of the most expensive cities in the world. Nevertheless, it is still cheaper to buy a local SIM if you will be staying for more than a few days in Singapore.

Singapore has three network providers:

  • SingTel Mobile
  • StarHub
  • M1

All of the networks offer speedy 4G coverage in the city, but if you have an old phone be aware that 2G is no longer available, having been superseded entirely by 3G.  Also, Singapore runs on GSM 900 and 1800, so if you are coming from the US or Canada with a CDMA phone, then your handset won’t be able to connect to the network.

You can buy SIM cards from 7-eleven stores,  which are dotted all over the place, and from petrol stations, supermarkets, post offices, or the phone shops themselves. Street vendors may also try and sell you a SIM card, but probably at a higher price. As a foreigner buying a SIM card in Singapore you will need to show your passport. Sim Cards are also available to buy on arrival at Changi airport.

 Wifi Availability

Free Wifi is available at McDonalds, Starbucks, and other public places. Download the Wireless@SG app to connect automatically to public hotspots.

Singtel Mobile is the largest mobile network operator, and offer the widest coverage across Singapore by a slight margin. However, all of the operators have a similar reach, and Singtel also have a notoriously bad customer service reputation. They are not recommended.

For most users, we would recommend using M1 for their cheap rates and good customer service.
